Due to the uninominal vote system, local elections are growing as important as never before in Romania. The results will trigger the score of the parliamentary elections due next autumn. And the latter elections will thus turn into mere political lottery, dramatically diminishing the importance of opinion polls. "Nazism and communism separated us for a while because of a treaty signed by the representatives of the two regimes, the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact. We have got the obligation to to correct the decisions made by the most cruel regimes." It was the President of Romania Traian Basescu who said it yesterday. He added that one way to correct such a decision was to support the Moldovan Republic's call for the European Union.

President Basescu may be interrogated in journalist kidnap case

The lawyers of journalist Ovidiu Ohanesian asked yesterday the court in charge of the Mohammaf Munaf case to interrogate the President of Romania Traian Basescu and the other members of the group for the crisis who had dealt with the release of the three Romanian journalists kidnapped in Iraq. The court is to decide on it by April 10.

Catalin Macovei won the contest and he became a president of the National Integrity Agency in Romania. Until now he worked as vice president of the same institution. He was the only candidate to pass the writing test in the contest.

Ukrainian helicopter crashes in the Black Sea

A Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the Ukrainian coast security crashed in the Black Sea last Thursday. For the time being there is no information about 12 of the 13 people aboard, as announced by the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The ministry spokesman Ihor Krol just said that one passenger was rescued close to the Poludenni Island, in the neighborhood of the Odessa harbor. NATO TV to be launched during Bucharest summit
The approaching NATO summit due in Bucharest has also got a premier in store: the North-Atlantic Alliance is going to launch an online television channel. Spokesman James Appathurai has confirmed for Associated Press that the official presentation is due during the Bucharest summit.
