Pensions vs. education: "right" fights with left weapons
-- The Tariceanu government wants to raise pensions. A measure always popular, always attracting polls. About 6 millions of retired Romanians can show their gratitude in next year's elections. The Blair option in Palestine
-- The release of an abducted BBC journalist in Gaza is being seen by some as an attempt by Hamas (which denies any part in the kidnapping) to curry favor with Tony Blair, who on stepping down as Britain's prime minister was appointed international envoy to Israel and Palestine. Blair has the thankless task of helping the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas build institutions for a viable state, following Hamas' military takeover of Gaza.

Romania tops European thieves list
The OLAF (European Anti-Fraud Office) released yesterday the 2006 report on cases of misuse of European funds. Romania, in 2006 a candidate to join the EU, is top of the list. Given the 70 such cases, Romania comes second as compared to other member states. It is equal to Belgium and it comes after Italy (71 fraud cases).

-- In the report on the misuse of EU funds in 2006 released yesterday by the OLAF, there are presented some 'tokens' of Romanian creativeness serving EU fund fraud.
