The straw that breaks the Coalition's back
Using an old British saying, we can notice that the dispute on Ticu Dumitrescu's status can be one more straw to break the camel's spine. In our case the camel is the D.A. ("Truth and Justice") Alliance, meaning the Coalition, now on the verge of dismembering. Since the agreements reached by the main partners in power are no longer obeyed, what can there follow? What part can president Traian Basescu play in this bizarre game?
Coalition agreements...

European moves that keep intact the old Romania
Adrian Nastase was untouchable until a delegation from the Eurosocialists descended on Bucharest to tell him that it would be difficult for the European comrades to continue publicly to defend the uninspired way Romania was joining the EU unless he quit. This demarche had been choreographed not just in Brussels but in Bucharest. The PSD was more likely to endure if Nastase's fall from power was seen as resulting from foreign pressure....

Defiant president
Basescu is no longer a president player, as he claimed he wanted to be when getting mandate. He has started full attack from an obviously superior stance. Yesterday he made TV statements to make latest crises worse instead of undoing them.
Basescu said: "There has started groundless, demagogical and irresponsible campaign, claiming I don't want the Securitate (ex Communist Secret Service) unveiled. My deeds show the opposite." He invoked several decisions...

Tariceanu wonders how the Alliance can still work
PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu asked his colleagues in the Alliance, Emil Boc's Democrats, of they had plotted together with the PSD (Social-Democrat Party) and the PRM ("Great Romania" Party) to hide the Communist crimes and the crimes of the ex Securitate (Communist Secret Service) from public opinion.
He made this when the Liberals were launching "The Liberals for Romania" program in Bucharest. The PM criticized the backdoor...

Deputies voted against Gojdu Ordinance
Because of one single vote Romanian deputies rejected yesterday the emergency ordinance to ratify the agreement with Hungary on establishing the Romanian-Hungarian Gojdu Foundation. (...)
But things weren't as clear as expected. Right after the session Sergiu Andon from the Conservative Party came up with arguable hypothesis: the ordinance is still on because it is subject to tacit consent. Andon made use of a legislative trick and explained...

Basescu disagrees with Tariceanu
Romanian president Traian Basescu made a press statement yesterday, explaining he turned down PM Tariceanu's offer to name Victor Paul Dobre minister for Parliament affairs. The Romanian president demanded new proposal.
Basescu opined that Victor Paul Dobre had responsibilities concerning Romanian prefects, as he was in charge of the General Department for Emergency Cases. The president expressed appreciation for Dobre's experience and activity...

Liberals are fond of shows
Yesterday the PNL (National Liberal Party) together with PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu boasted about the project "The Liberals for Romania", based on the rural reform and the health system reform. Party leaders, many MPs and some hundred Liberal representatives from all over the country attended yesterday's event.
They presented the reforms most attendants were familiar with in a day with hot parliamentary activity. Liberal senators and deputies chose...

Romanian parties' representatives argued during EPP Congress
The official delegations of the PD (Democrat Party), the PPCD (Popular Christian-Democrat Party) and the UDMR (Democrat Union of Magyars in Romania) argued during the EPP Congress in Rome. Each of the groups tried to plead for their own interests. The Democrats failed to have their application to join the EPP on the day's agenda. The UDMR also failed resolution aimed at demanding all Romanian parties affiliated to...
