This piece by David Gutmann is one of the best psychological analyses of SHAME and the Arab PSYCHE I have read, and because it deals with something so critically important, I am going to quote a rather large excerpt:

The Arab world is suffering a crisis of humiliation.
Their armies are routed not only by Americans, but also by tiny, Jewish Israel;

and as Arthur Koestler once remarked, the Arab world has not, in the last 500 years or so, PRODUCED much besides rugs, dirty postcards, elaborations on the belly-dance esthetic (and, of course, some innovative TERRORIST practices).

They have NO SCIENCE to speak of, NO ART, hardly ANY INDUSTRY save oil, vVERY LITTLE LITERATURE, and portentous MUSIC which consists largely of LUGOBRIOUS SONGS celebrating the SLAUGHTER of Jews.

NOW that the Arabs have acquired national consciousness, and they compare their societies to other nations, these deficiencies become PAINFULLY EVIDENT, particularly to the upper-class Arab KIDS who attend foreign universities.

There they learn about the accomplishments of Christians, Jews, (Freud, Einstein, for starters) and women.

And yet, with the exception of Edward Said, there is scarcely a contemporary Arab name in the bunch.

NO WONDER, then, that major RECRUITMENT to al-Qaeda' s ranks takes place among Arab university students.

But this TACTIC is not, I suggest, a PRODUCT of Islam.
Rather, it is a product of the BRUISED Arab PSYCHE.

Remember that the Japanese also turned to suicide tactics in WWII to evade the humiliation of defeat.

Though their religion was SHINTO rather than Muslim, they too constituted a PARADIGM SHAME/ HONOR culture, and defeat brought about, as with the Arabs, a furiously suicidal / homicidal response.

After their armies had been defeated, their fleets sunk, their cities set aflame, and their home islands invaded, they launched the kamikaze bomber offensive, thereby committing a hi-tech form of HARA - KIRI, their usual remedy against INTOLERABLE SHAME.

It is in this way that the modern Arab world resembles the Japan of World War II. In both cases it is NOT RELIGIOUS but PSYCHICS wounds, the wounds inflicted by defeat and evident INFERIORITY, that INSPIRE suicide bombers.

What a delightful concoction is the word "spin." It sounds so innocent. For those who practice the arcane art of the focus group and market survey, the word is itself a demonstration of marketers' power to make bad news go away.

Unfortunately, the news from the Middle East is grim and getting grimmer by the minute. We've barely recovered from being spun into backing the war in Iraq. Did Saddam Hussein have nukes? (There is no evidence he did, and our government knew it at the time). Was there an alliance between Hussein and al Qaeda? Most Americans (including Vice President Dick Cheney) continue to believe this, even though it is a patent untruth. Spin works.

Did Hezbollah invade Israeli territory and capture two Israelis on July 12? This apparent fact has been called into question by contemporary news reports by the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse and French Yahoo. These reports suggest the opposite occurred, that is to say, Israel invaded Lebanon -- that two Israeli soldiers crossed into southern Lebanon near Aita al-Shaab, where the soldiers were captured by Hezbollah. Spun again? The incident remains murky, but given the stakes, the question needs to be raised.

Referirea este la la acele sate folosite de Hizballah contra armatei si nu a fost o amenintzare ci o concluzie in urma discutziei in Cabinet.

In aceste sate Hizballah se foloseste de casele civililor pentru a deschide focul asupra armatei (asa cum s-a intamplat la Bint Jebel unde au murit 8 soldatzi). Soldatzii au gasite in casele cucerite arsenale intregi care in afara de arme personale si munitzii includeau lansatoare de rachete. Hizballah trage si din moschei.

Israelis Kill 23 More Palestinians In Gaza - 4 Children

GAZA - Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling on the Gaza Strip Wednesday killed 23 Palestinians and wounded more than 40 according to Palestinian sources in one of the bloodiest days since Israel began its offensive in the Strip one month ago.

Most of the dead were militants, Palestinians said, but four children were among the civilian fatalities. Three of the wounded were in critical condition, health ministry official Mo'aweya Hassanein added.

Two of the children, sisters - Shaf and Mary Oukal, ages 2 and 9 - were killed when a shell fired by an Israeli tank hit them as they were walking in the streets of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics and eyewitnesses reported.

Medics at Shiffa Hospital in Gaza City later added that the sisters' 40-year-old mother died of her wounds. Their 12 year-old sister remained in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses said that three separate airstrikes carried out by Israeli aircraft on Wednesday evening on al-Sha'af neighbourhood in Gaza City killed four Palestinian militants.

Palestinian security officials said dozens of Israeli armoured vehicles and bulldozers rolled into the area in the early hours of Wednesday, amid intensive gunfire.

Earlier, Palestinians witnesses said that one Israeli army tank fired shells during the pre-dawn advance, killing and wounding Palestinian militants and civilians.

Dupa aceasta riposta, Libanul cu infrastructura cam distrusa, case daramate, ruinat economic risca sa devina o gaura neagra de genul Somaliei , Liberiei sau Afganistanului condus de talibani. Adica o zona lbera de orice suveranitate , fara autoritati care sa controleze teritoriul si populatia.

Intr-o zona deja bantuita de anarhia bandelor , populata de oameni disperati si plini de resentimente fata de Isarel putem presupune ca se vor gasi si mai multi teroristi.
O situatie care i-ar putea face pe multi isarelieni sa-si aduca aminte cu duiosie de Arafat sau sa-l considere pe Nasser drept un intelept filoisraelian.

In aceste conditii care ar fi solutile Israelului?!
Sa-si securizeze granita pina la niveluri greu de imaginat si costuri imense .(pe langa un gard ceva mai tehnologizat decat zidul berlinez multe patrule cu glontu pe teava si spioni care sa spioneze patrulele, ca am zis contrabanda cu droguri, arme si ce mai nimereste, afdica vicii si bani si oamenii sunt coruptibili iar israelienii sunt si ei oameni!)
Sau sa ocupe militar Libanul. Lasand la o parte consecintele politice ale ocupatiei costurile vor fi si mai mari, caci experienta arata ca iti trebuiesc mai multe trupe sa controlezi o tara decat sa o infrangi militar (v cel mai recent cazul irakian. Sau Norvegia, unde trupele de ocupatie erau de 3 mai multe decat cele care au invadat tara. {asta nu inseamna ca compar regimurile politice, caci desi ideologiile sunt diferite problemele tehnice sunt aceleasi}).
Si astea sunt solutii normale, civilizate. Despre celelate nu-i cazul sa discutam .
