Bolton: US air strikes on Iran would be major step towards Iraq victory
May 7, 2008, 12:19 PM (GMT+02:00)

Former American UN ambassador John Bolton said that while a hostile Iranian response harming US interests existed, the damaged inflicted by Tehran would be far higher if Washington took no action. He was quoted by the UK Telegraph as urging therefore that Washington order air strikes against the Revolutionary Guards Corps camps training Iraqi insurgents.

A US spokesman last week confirmed DEBKAfile’s earlier disclosure that the IRGC’s al Qods Brigades had drafted Hizballah personnel to support Iraq’s Shiite militias and train them at facilities in Iran.

Hi Herut, Actually you need only 4 maneuver divisions and 2 maneuver brigades to successfully invade Iran and effect regime change. You know -the US would only invade and occupy a small province that borders Iraq, Kuwait and the Persian Gulf. That would allow the US to seize 4% of the world' oil supply which is also 80% of Iran's oil supply.

The groups living in that province are not Persians, they're Arabs. They are tribes and clans whose blood relatives live across the border in Iraq and Kuwait, and they have repeatedly attempted (nearly a dozen times in the last 100 years) to gain autonomy or independence, the most recent attempts being during the 1979 "revolution" and then twice during the Iraq-Iran War. They would view the US as "liberators".

Like Iraq, seizing the oil fields in that province, would allow the US to dictate that the oil be sold in US Dollars (instead of other currencies) causing the US Dollar to rise slightly, maybe 8 to 10 points, against the Euro. It would also turn Iran into an instant net importer of oil.

The Iranian government would collapse in 30 to 60 days. The economy, which is under gasoline rationing, would collapse almost immediately, the government would not be able to pay its military or government employees, and would not be able to pay housing, health care, unemployment or their version of "food stamp" benefits. The possibility of revolution or civil war or both among Persians, in addition to secessionist movements by the Kurds, Lors or Baluchs is very real. What ever was left of the military that was functioning, would need to be deployed in Tabriz and Tehran, and to the areas of Kurdistan, Loristan and Baluchistan.
