There are over 7,600 Romanians under precautionary arrest or sentenced to prison throughout the whole world, according to the data released by the Romanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs for a MP who asked the Ministry for it.
The data is only on those Romanians who agreed that Romanian consulate authorities in the states where they were arrested or imprisoned should be informed about their situation. At the end of February, when the Ministry proceeded to the research, the total number was 7,639.
Most Romanians deprived of freedom are in detention in Italy (3,194) and Spain (2,102). There follow France, Belgium and the US. The prisons in each of these states house more than 300 Romanians retained or convicted. Then there come the Romanians imprisoned in Hungary, Austria and Germany. But Romanian suspects and criminals reached exotic countries like Cuba too. Prisons in Thailand, Vietnam or Pakistan house 2 Romanians each. (D.E.I.)
