Marian Vanghelie, a president of the PSD (Social-Democrat Party) branch in Bucharest, has got a surprise in store for the top party members: quit his candidacy in the Bucharest general mayor election and announce full support for Miron Mitrea's candidacy instead. Sorin Oprescu seems to be out of race for good, as Ion Iliescu's side has failed to promote its approach.
On the other hand, it is to be mentioned the opinion poll ordered by the PSD president Mircea Geoana has rated his party second in the preferences of Bucharest inhabitants and at national level as well.
According to party sources, local PSD leaders have been under pressure so that they would vote against Marian Vanghelie's candidacy in the Bucharest mayor election. In order to counter the game played by his adversaries, Marian Vanghelie talked to Miron Mitrea, coordinator of the PSD electoral campaign. The conclusion was that Marian Vanghelie should quit his candidacy the very day the party's Executive Commitee would meet. He is to announce his colleagues that the choice for a candidate is up to them and that the Bucharest branch is going to support Miron Mitrea instead.
Mircea Geoana announced yesterday that a decision would be made the following week. (...) (C.A.)
