The President of Romania Traian Basescu has expressed his "surprise at the completely superficial approach" of minister Teodor Melescanu and minister Adrian Cioroianu too, for late last year the two officials participated at foreign reunions and promised to send military troops to Chad without having consent from the CSAT (Supreme Council for National Defense). Sources cited by Mediafax Agency claim as follows: "As for the use of Romanian military forces in foreign missions in 2008, the only thing decided was to send 2 officers to the operation unit in France. The 102 figure was never at stake."
According to sources, President Basescu was taken by surpised because of the unprofessional approach of government representatives, since there was no CSAT decision on it and since the risks in Chad were much higher, as compared to other battlefields.
The Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu announced last week the permission for the participation of 120 Romanian soldiers to the EU military mission in Chad and the Central Africa Republic, within the French troops. (D.I.)
