The "Proof of Principle" Romanian-American military application to start on the Mihail Kogalniceanu base, Romania, next week signifies the official beginning of US troops' presence on Romanian territory. The exercise is meant to legitimize the EU Army unit concept at brigade level. Brigades are going to train in both Romania and Bulgaria.
The application is due to start in August 17 and about 1,000 US soldiers and civil staff are to participate. At first they are to test the command and control capacities needed for future displacing of troops at brigade level, part of the JTF East. The training is to check and validate the tasks and staff of the JTF East headquarters, as well as the infrastructure in Romania and Bulgaria.
Colonel Peri Anest, the JTF East Commander, comments it as an extraordinary opportunity to get to know a beautiful country and the locals, whom he describes as very affectionate, receptive and dedicated to their work. (D.D.)
