Cristian Diaconescu, spokesman of the PSD (Social-Democrat Party), said yesterday there was no Romanian law forbidding certain companies to sponsor political parties during electoral campaign. He explained: "No illegal elements have come up so far, therefore it is useless to talk about it. This mechanism has been used for all Romanian parties over the last 15 years and there is no law banning it."
The PSD official also claimed there was no clue that the finance Dinu Patriciu's companies had provided to the PSD had been illegal. According to Diaconescu, double sponsorship from businessmen to political parties was current practice in Romania, because of lacking proper legislation (...) (R.A.)
