Romanian president Traian Basescu commented yesterday on episcope Laslo Tokes's statement on national minorities issues: "Who does this name belong to? Is it the name of a member state?"
Basescu said that EU decisions on Romania are up to member states. He described Laszlo Tokes' view as the right to free expression. In a petition sent to EU officials last week, Tokes criticized the state of minorities' rights in Romania as far as cultural and territorial autonomy was concerned. The petition required that the report on Romania due in May should take it into account.
Basescu reminded Romania was a unitary, independent and indivisible national state that would join the EU as such. He mentioned the decision on the European Commission's report was up to EU officials. (A.H.)
